How do I get my daily word?
Open Etymology each day to see a new word with its full etymology. You can also enable daily notifications in Settings to get a reminder at your preferred time.
What is included for free?
The daily word of the day with full etymology deep-dive, pronunciation, 7-day word history, and word card sharing are always free. Premium features include all four difficulty tiers, favorites, collections, quizzes, and the full word archive.
How do I subscribe to Premium?
Open the app and tap on any premium feature (Library, Practice, or the crown icon). You'll see subscription options for monthly ($2.99) or yearly ($19.99), with a free 1-week trial. All payments are handled securely by Apple.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Go to your iPhone Settings > tap your name (Apple ID) > Subscriptions > Etymology > Cancel Subscription. Your premium access continues until the end of the current billing period.
How do I restore my purchase on a new device?
Open Etymology > Settings > Upgrade to Premium > tap "Restore Purchases" at the bottom of the paywall screen. Your subscription is tied to your Apple ID and will restore automatically.
Does the app work offline?
Yes. All word content is bundled with the app and stored on your device. Etymology works fully offline — no internet connection required.
How many words are in the app?
Etymology ships with over 1,000 curated words across four difficulty levels, with new words added in app updates.
How are the four difficulty levels different?
"Keep it casual" features everyday words with surprising origins. "Words I've seen" covers familiar vocabulary you can now define. "Broaden my horizons" expands your comprehension with intermediate words. "Challenge me" offers rare, literary words for serious enthusiasts.
What devices are supported?
Etymology requires iOS 17 or later and runs on iPhone and iPad.
I found an incorrect etymology. How do I report it?
We take accuracy seriously. Please email us at etymology.support@negativitylabs.com with the word in question and we'll investigate promptly.

Troubleshooting

App won't open

Force quit the app and reopen it. If the issue persists, try deleting and reinstalling Etymology from the App Store. Note: local data like favorites and collections will be removed.

Notifications not arriving

Go to iPhone Settings > Notifications > Etymology and ensure notifications are enabled. Also check that you're not in a Focus mode that blocks Etymology notifications.

Widget shows wrong word

Widgets update at midnight. Try removing and re-adding the widget, or restart your device. Opening the app will also trigger a widget refresh.

Subscription not recognized

Open Etymology > Settings > Upgrade to Premium and tap "Restore Purchases" at the bottom of the screen. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.
